When you look at your smile in the mirror, you should feel good about what you see. If there are any imperfections you are focused on, it is time to fix them. And dental veneers can be a great place to start.

A popular cosmetic procedure, dental veneers are a nearly permanent solution that provides you with quick yet incredible results.

What are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are shells that are bonded to the front surface of teeth to improve appearance. They are designed to be a long-lasting cover-up for any number of imperfections, including:

  • Discolored teeth
  • Large gaps between teeth
  • Weakened teeth
  • Broken or chipped teeth
  • Misaligned teeth

Veneers can prove to be very beneficial in transforming smiles in a non-invasive manner.

The Different Types of Veneers

Two main types of veneers are commonly available, including porcelain veneers and composite resin veneers.

Porcelain veneers are the gold standard in veneers. They are very durable and can handle strength much like your tooth’s enamel. And they are customized just for your tooth. The porcelain is beautiful and so natural-looking that no one will know it isn’t your real tooth unless you tell them.

Composite resin veneers are often made in the office, with your dentist applying a layer of composite material to an etched tooth. They are customized to fit your tooth and your smile, but not in the way porcelain veneers are. And while they may be a more affordable option, they definitely don’t come with the same strength and longevity that porcelain veneers have.

What You Need to Know About Dental Veneers

The procedure of getting dental veneers involves a couple of trips to the dentist. Primarily because they are custom-designed to fit your teeth – carefully matching the contouring and color of the surrounding teeth.

The first visit to your dentist will be a consultation to discuss your options – and determine whether veneers are a good choice. At this time you will discuss how they work and what you can expect during the process.

Next comes the prep work. To get a veneer that will blend well with your current teeth, there is some work to do. For example, your dentist will shave off a thin layer of enamel on the tooth or teeth that will be covered with the veneer. The reason for this is that a shell is going on top of the tooth and you want to make sure that it doesn’t appear like a thicker tooth than those around it.

Also at this time, the dentist will take an impression of the tooth or teeth so that the customized veneer can be created for you.

On your last visit, you will get your veneer attached. Your dentist will ensure that it is a perfect color and perfect fit before bonding it to your tooth. The tooth or teeth will be cleaned, polished, and etched/roughened to give the bonding agent a better grip. You want the veneer to last for many years – even a lifetime.

Once it is in place, caring for your veneers is easy. You will treat them just as you do your regular teeth, making sure to brush and floss regularly. You will want to consider using a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste to protect the veneer. The better you care for them, the longer they will last.
